I am a well-traveled professional tour guide, located in Amsterdam, with experience in cruise presentatrions .
As I am preparing enrichment program lectures aboard large cruise ships, including Tahiti, I would be able to help you with your travels. Your small group will get a first-class preparation with the Gauguin theme in Paris, Arles, Bretagne, Tahiti, Marquesas / Marquises, with 3 BBC-quality Powerpoint presentations.
Gauguin is still highly contested in terms of his wild, libertine lifestyle and the way he dealt with his friends and colleagues. We will discuss the ups and downs of his career and the way he was a misfit in socity in Paris, Bretagne, Tahiti, Marquesas, and how he had a shaky foothold in the art market in Paris.
Power point Presentation 1 deals with the artistic and personal tension between Vincent van Gogh and Gauguin in Paris and Arles.
Power point Presentation 2 deals with Gauguin and his production of works of art in Tahiti and the Marquesas / Marquises islands
Power point Presentation 3 deals with the field of Gauguin and sexuality as it was played out in France and in the Tropics.
How can we look at the fact that he took a 13 year old native as his model and mistress, made her pregnant and left her without any support? Which cultural perspective should we adopt?
Gauguin, never mincing words, called this child his personal legacy to the local indigenous culture.
And how do we read this painting? In 1988 the big Washington DC exhibition cataloge of his work this painting was described as follows: “The Delightful Land is perhaps Gauguin’s most uncompromisingly shocking painting, with its full frontal nudity...”.
Is this a bible belt, prim, stuffy libarians' attitude? Whose cultural framework should we use?
Image above: The yellow House in Arles in which Gauguin and Van Gogh lived together far a while, rubbing shoulders, competing and finally hetting on each other's nerves. As the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam is temporarily closed in the beginning of 2013 because of structural repairs, and there was a chance to show a series of the best Van Gogh drawings in the separate upstairs floor, the Works on paper department of TEFAF, the largest annual fine art fair in the whole world, taking place in Maastricht, Holland. These Vincent van Gogh works were obviously not for sale - as an exception to the rule. In the stairwell this beautiful 3D scene could be captured. The author in green, a client in yellow.
I am fluent in Dutch, English, and I have a good command of German / Deutsch and a limited command of French and Italian, (Français & Italiano). Disclaimer: I will give you a state of the art ART HISTORY and SOCIOLOGY viewpoint.
I can travel with you. However, I cannot help you with hotels, restaurants, transportation, sights and excursions.
