Gerard van Berckel (c. 1620-1686). Commissioner of the Finances of Holland. Owned a "Jupiter, Venus and Mercury" by J. ver Meer. This is an early Vermeer history painting which has vanished in later ages.
The painting was inherited by his son Willem van Berckel (1679-1759), who became burgomaster in Delft.
In Delft we find Vermeer paintings in the private art collections of Pieter Claesz van Ruijven, Hendrick Ariaensz. van Buyten, Johannes de Renialme, Cornelis van Assendelft, Cornelis de Helt and Gerard van Berckel.
Note. Exh. cat. Johannes Vermeer, 1995, p. 48.
