Matheus de Berg / van den Berg (c.1615-1687). His father, a sail-maker from Ghent, paid tuition for training both Gillis and his brother Matheus as painters. Their uncle was the Delft silversmith Daniel de Bergh. Matheus became a history painter in the manner of Van Couwenbergh. He also studied with P.P. Rubens.
In Guild 1638, headman 1649.
In 1657 he inherited a back annex of a house at the south end of Oude Delft from his brother Daniel; their father's sail making gear was still in it.
18 juni 1589 (ondertrouw 3 juni). De bewaard gebleven doopboeken van Delft beginnen
eerst in 1616.
Bruijn Harmensz Schinkel was een zoon van Harmen Jansz Schinkel, die 23 juli
1568 te Delft is terechtgesteld wegens het drukken van verboden boeken, en van
diens vrouw Agniese Bruijnen Keijsers (Caesars)."
Note. RKD Bredius archive, artist folder, quoting 1657 inheritance. On 5 Aug. 1669 Matheus makes a will for his son, Gerard de Bergh, lawyer at the Courts of Holland. On 17 May 1677 he bequeaths a house at North west corner of Slikstraat (=Achterom) to his son Jacob. Thieme-B. III p. 370. Saur IX, p. 381 is incomplete as it omits Delft. Born in Yperen? Montias 1981, p. 201 claims birth in Delft. See discussions in exh.cat. 'Vermeer and the Delft School', Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City, 2001, p. 95.
