Machteld van Best (before 1614-1687). In 1632 she married Willem van Erven, silk merchant, active 1653-1677. She lived next to Vermeer on Oude Langendijk in the other corner house, west of Molenpoort (now Jozefstraat). She inherited an important Haarlem collection of paintings which included a Cornelis Cornelisz van Haarlem.
Note. Montias 1989 p. 177-178 and Montias 1993, p. 198 and chapter 10, note 26, 28. Her house extended along Jozefstraat from Nieuwe Langendijk to Burgwal / Turfmarkt. However in Montias 1980, note 36 he mentions that this home belonged to Simon Slingelandt, referring to Swillens 1950 plate 35. Marriage GAD on Internet, DTB 117; death in 1687 DTB 44.
